Westworld season 4’s Christina finds an old memorial plaque for her stalker, despite him dying only a few days earlier. What’s going on here?
Why does Christina’s stalker already have a memorial plaque in Westworld season 4? Despite Dolores’ apparent death during the fight against Rehoboam, Evan Rachel Wood mysteriously returns as “Christina” in Westworld season 4. On the surface, she’s a video game NPC writer living in New York circa 2060, but as the Westworld faithful would’ve already guessed, something strange is afoot …
Christina spent almost the entirety of her debut episode dodging a persistent stalker called Peter Myers, who firmly believed her game scripts control the city’s population. Christina wrote a story about a man losing everything and jumping from a tall building, and Peter is convinced this tale has dictated his reality. In Westworld season 4, episode 2, Christina investigates further. She visits the Hope Center for Mental Health – a hospital Peter posthumously donated his money to – but finds many more questions than answers.
By far the biggest curiosity is a memorial plaque inside the now-abandoned Hope Center, which dedicates an entire wing in Peter’s honor. Since Christina’s stalker only died a few days prior, this plaque is impossible. What in Robert Ford’s name is going on here?
Is Peter Repeating A Westworld Loop?
One potential explanation for the memorial is that Peter is playing out a classic Westworld loop. All signs suggest Christina’s environment is some kind of Delos park (or, at the very least, not regular human society), meaning everyone around her may be following “loops.” This term describes the cycles WestWorld hosts would play out ad nauseam while serving as park attractions, and Peter’s loop could be losing his job, stalking Christina, and taking his own life. The pattern then resets, and none of the hosts recall these events.
Westworld‘s strange memorial plaque could be proof that Peter has leapt from that building over and over again, but just like no cowboy ever remembered the old WestWorld saloon heist, his death feels new every time Christina witnesses it. Since she’s becoming increasingly inquisitive, visiting the Hope Center might not be part of Christina’s usual loop, hence the memorial plaque existing where (or when) it shouldn’t. Or perhaps the clue was left behind deliberately by whoever created this weird version of New York – a step in Christina’s own loop.
Westworld’s Peter Could’ve Stolen Another Patient’s Identity
Peter bequeathing his money to the Hope Center for Mental Health implies he stayed there at some point previously, and Christina finds drawings of the “tower“He mentioned during her hospital visit. Perhaps, therefore, the man who stalked Christina was not actually Peter Myers. He might’ve met another patient during his stint at the Hope Center – the real Peter, and the person from the memorial. The authentic Peter told his new friend about Christina, and shared wild theories about this video game writer controlling his life, but then passed away. When his friend is later discharged from the hospital, he adopts Peter Myers’ identity and begins investigating Christina on his dead pal’s behalf.
Not only does this address the plaque issue (the real Peter died years earlier), but a major inconsistency in his story gets solved too. The memorial notes Peter left a “fortune“behind, but Christina’s stalker talked about getting fired as if her script financially ruined him. Why would someone who still possessed such a substantial amount of money (enough to have a wing dedicated in his honor) be in such a desperate situation? Unless, of course, these are two separate men.
Is Christina Skipping Time In Westworld Season 4?
When Peter assaults Christina with a blade, she’s saved by an unseen hero audiences can probably assume is James Marsden’s Teddy. But after Evan Rachel Wood’s character momentarily glances away, the two brawling men have weirdly vanished. Just like a WestWorld host, it’s possible Christina was paused, removed from the park while Teddy’s disturbance was handled, then inserted seamlessly back into place. If so, how many other occasions has Christina potentially been removed from everyday life? How much time has she cumulatively skipped? What Christina thinks are days in Westworld season 4 might really be years, explaining why the Hope Center has already erected a memorial for Peter Myers. Christina is a self-confessed social recluse, so the only people who’d need to be complicit in this ruse are Maya and her boss.
Westworld continues Sunday on HBO.
