Thor: The Dark World never shows Thor and Jane Foster’s breakup. The deleted scene of their split would have fit the God of Thunder’s arc better.
A deleted Thor: The Dark World The scene of Jane Foster breaking up with Thor would have suited Thor’s overall arc much better. Since the first Thor film in 2012, the God of Thunder’s arc is rooted in his relationships with other characters, such as his relationship with Loki. Thor’s other significant relationship in the films is with Jane Foster, a brilliant scientist he meets on Earth. While their relationship is explored in Thor 2between Thor 2 and Thor: RagnarokThor and Jane go their separate ways.
Despite Thor 2’s box office success, it is usually considered one of the weakest MCU films. Some of these weaknesses are attributed to the changes in post-production. The Dark World director Alan Taylor previously spoke about his original vision of the film having more childlike wonder in it, but there were other significant changes, as well. In addition to Loki coming back, it appears Alan Taylor meant to keep Thor and Jane split up. This was supposed to have been unambiguous, with a breakup scene between Thor and Jane that was cut from the final film. In the finished release, Thor returns to Earth in a post-credits scene to give Jane a kiss.
The Thor: Love and Thunder The trailer shows Thor reuniting with Jane, who now wields Mjölnir. Thor appears to be still sore about their breakup since he knows the exact time apart when Jane asks: “Eight years, seven months, and six days, give or take“Thor’s comments show he misses Jane and hint that their”mutual dumping,“as he put it in Thor: Ragnarok may not have been so mutual. With the break-up clearly having meant so much to Thor, in hindsight, it’s strange that their breakup was left offscreen. Their reunion in Love and Thunder would carry much more weight if the audience had seen Thor and Jane Foster’s Dark World breakup. Whether Thor and Jane’s romance will be fully rekindled remains to be seen, but a breakup in Thor: The Dark World would’ve added emotional gravitas to the upcoming film.
Thor: Love and Thunder may finally give Thor Odinson a fully realized arc outside of his family. While Thor and Jane may grow close again, her breast cancer storyline from the comics is confirmed to be explored. If the film follows Jane Foster / Mighty Thor’s comics arc, she will become weaker every time she transforms into Might Thor and uses her powers. If this is the case, Thor: Love and Thunder may include the death of Jane. While her death would certainly provide character development for Thor, ultimately, his arc should come from self-acceptance. It is clear that Thor wants Jane, but what he needs is to find himself outside of being a god, and outside of the Avengers.
Thor, even by Avengers standards, is hard to relate to, which may also be why Thor undergoes many changes throughout the MCU. Seeing Thor and Jane’s breakup in The Dark World would have helped make him infinitely more relatable. While he may be a god, he still makes mistakes, and given Thor’s behavior in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s not a stretch to guess Thor may have flubbed the relationship. If they reconcile in Thor: Love and Thunder, it’s inevitable there will be context revealed about why and how they broke up. However, Thor: The Dark World could’ve laid the groundwork for this instead of leaving Taika Waititi to pick up the pieces of Thor’s broken relationship.
