Legacies’ series finale bringing together characters from all three Vampire Diaries shows would be the perfect way to say goodbye to the universe.
Warning: Spoilers for Legacies season 4, episode 18, “By the End of This, You’ll Know Who You Were Meant to Be.”
Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) surprisingly agreed to a new role in Legaciesand in doing so, he now has the potential to make the Legacies series finale the perfect ending for The Vampire Diaries universe. The past few seasons of the second Vampire Diaries spinoff have been up and down, with some characters being sidelined when it appeared the writers no longer knew what to do with their storylines. One of those characters is Landon Kirby, who has spent Legacies season 4 sidelined in Limbo, aka Purgatory.
Still, Landon’s time there was not completely wasted. Even if he couldn’t get out of Limbo, he figured he could at least help others find peace and cross over to the other side. One of those souls he helped cross over was his own mother, with whom he’d had a contentious relationship in life. He even gave up his own chance at peace to help send Alaric (Matthew Davis) back to the world of the living. Landon’s selflessness and skill at helping others to find peace catches the eye of the Ferryman (JJ Dunlap) in Legacies season 4, episode 18, who, as it turns out, is actually a goddess named Lynn (Tasya Teles). After some back and forth, Landon agrees to take Lynn’s place as the new Ferryman so she can find peace in Valhalla.
It may seem an unfair fate for Landon to now be bound to Limbo forever, cursed to ferry souls back and forth. But the twist sets up Landon to potentially be a key player in the coming battle for Legacies series finale, even with him being trapped in Limbo. Before she crossed over, Lynn mentioned that she once took pity on a few humans and brought them back to life. It’s safe to assume that Landon has all the powers as the Ferryman that Lynn had, meaning he now has the power to also resurrect people. With him knowing the battle against the gods that Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and the rest of his friends are soon to face in the world above, now would be perfect time for Landon to resurrect beloved dead characters from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals to join the students of the Salvatore School in their fight. It would be the perfect way not only to bring the Legacies series finale to a close, but also to wrap up the entirety of the Vampire Diaries universe on a high note.
Hope and the rest of the Super Squad are in for the fight of their lives against Ken (Luke Mitchell) and the rest of the gods. Some likely won’t make it out alive. They need all the help they can get, and with Landon now having the power to bring people back from the dead, it would be silly for Legacies to squander the opportunity of bringing back old characters for one final, grand battle. It is not certain that Landon has the power to bring back people from Valhalla, or just from Limbo. But it’s not as though Legacies hasn’t played fast and loose with The Vampire Diaries mythology throughout its run. That could easily be a twist written into the finale.
Legacies has faced past criticism for seeming to forget it’s part of The Vampire Diaries universe. While characters from TVD and The Originals were sometimes mentioned, few, if any, ever showed up. Legacies season 4 made an attempt to correct that, bringing back a number of characters from both shows in episode 15, “Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found.” The Mikaelson family reunion in Legacies season 4, episode 15 has been the highest-rated episode of the season so far. It proves something that the spinoff has sometimes forgotten: it’s the interweaving of characters that have made the shows so beloved. The Vampire Diaries universe has always been about families, whether related by blood or not, who stand by one another through thick and thin. Bringing together multiple characters from all three shows for Legacies‘series finale would not only be thrilling, but the perfect way to say goodbye to a beloved TV universe.
