Will Jurassic World 4 happen? With Jurassic World Dominion wrapping up various arcs, here’s what’s known about the future of the franchise.
Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Jurassic World Dominion.
Although there’s no official confirmation yet, it remains possible there will be a Jurassic World 4 at some point in the future, with a few story avenues a sequel could explore. Jurassic World Dominion very much serves as a conclusion to the sequel trilogy, bringing together arcs from across the new movies but also seeing the return of Jurassic Park‘s main characters, such as Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum). That helps to give it a sense of finality, but does not necessarily mean the franchise will be going extinct.
Jurassic Park has seemed dead before, with a 14-year gap between Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World releasing, despite Steven Spielberg’s efforts to make a Jurassic Park 4 happen at various points in that period. Jurassic World instantly revitalized the saga, becoming the then third highest grossing movie of all time and earning mostly positive reviews. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom did not quite reach the same heights, with a strong box office but far more mixed reviews. That downward trend continued with the next movie, as Jurassic World Dominion received negative reviews from critics.
Still, that does not completely rule out Jurassic World 4. The Jurassic The franchise is one of the biggest of all time, and the name alone has major pull and, even after so many sequels, still evokes memories of Spielberg’s original. Jurassic Park, which remains a classic. So will Jurassic World 4 actually happen? Here’s what we know.
Is Dominion The Last One, Or Will Jurassic World 4 Happen?
There has been some confusion over whether Jurassic World Dominion is the last one, with Chris Pratt suggesting it ends the franchise and then walking those comments back. Certainly, there is a sense in which it feels like the end, as the stories of main characters from both Jurassic trilogies have their arcs nicely wrapped-up. At the same time, though, there’s not necessarily a sense of permanence with that, especially because it’s such a recognizable IP. Producer Frank Marshall has previously said Jurassic World 4 is a possibility, and given it’s a movie that would likely make $ 1 billion for Universal, then presumably at some point there will be another one. Whether it’s a direct continuation or a new reboot, Hollywood finds a way.
Jurassic World 4 Cast: Who Can Return?
Given the much celebrated return of Jurassic Park‘s original characters in Dominion, then it seems unlikely they would come back again. That was a case of saying goodbye to Alan, Ellie, and Ian, and a chance for Neill, Dern, and Goldblum to properly sign off from the franchise. Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing are perhaps more likely to come back as part of Jurassic World 4‘s cast, since they’ve headlined the rebooted franchise and could serve as the returning legacy faces if there’s a decent gap between movies. Among Jurassic World Dominion‘s cast, then DeWanda Wise’ Kayla Watts could be someone they look to as a continued main character, taking on new adventures in her new place, and Ramsey Cole (Mamoudou Athie) could take BioSyn in a new direction.
Jurassic World 4 Story: What Dominion’s Ending Means For The Future
As well as the matter of returning cast and characters, there’s also a question of just what Jurassic World 4‘s story could be. And again, there are a few hurdles to overcome with regards to that, because Jurassic World Dominion‘s ending does not overtly set up a future for the franchise: not only do stories get tied up, but the major conflict with the dinosaurs is largely resolved as well, as BioSyn’s headquarters is turned into a global sanctuary for them. Still, a few do still roam in the wild, and this is the Jurassic franchise: it is not too much of a stretch to image people once again looking to exploit the science for their own greed, and finding new ways to bring the dino-conflict back to life. Jurassic World 4 exploring a new era is also something with potential, admittedly with a change of title too, looking at, say, the Cretaceous period more. Another park would surely be impossible (though again, it’s Jurassic), but looking more at the black market dinosaur traders and possible threats and pockets of breakouts across the world may be where its future lies.
Jurassic World 4 Release Date Prediction
If it were already confirmed or at least in some stage of early development, then Jurassic World 4‘s release date would likely be summer 2025/2026, keeping with a similar gap between releases in the new trilogy. However, given there’s no sign of a story for Jurassic World 4, and the negative critical reviews, then it’s likely there will be a longer wait. Universal probably wouldn’t want it to be another dozen years between movies, but Jurassic World 4 releasing somewhere around 2028 feels like a reasonable prediction.
