Although Halloween Kills received a polarizing reception, the threequel, Halloween Ends, is due for release in October and could end the trilogy on a high note. But when one trilogy ends, five more trilogies begin. Hollywood loves three-movie arcs, which leads to studios sometimes prematurely announcing trilogies before they’ve even seen how successful the first movie is.
Whether the series is on its second movie, first movie, or it hasn’t even begun yet, most audiences do not know about these planned trilogies. Between a brand new Star Wars trilogy and remaking the most iconic horror movie ever into three parts, these upcoming series could either be highly influential or completely tarnish the legacies of whole franchises.
The Planet Of The Apes
The original Planet of the Apes movie did not just start a trilogy, but there are five films in the original series. And then the reboot / prequel series arrived, which are some of the best apocalyptic movies of the 2010s, was revolutionary in its visual effects, and it made audiences root against their species in an absolutely irreversible way.
It’s hard to follow that up, but with the property now in the hands of Disney, the studio is certainly going to try. Filmmaker Wes Ball will direct the next Apes movie, but, as it’s in the very early stages, it isn’t clear whether the new trilogy will be a continuation of the reboot series or another reboot.
The Batman
It’d come as a surprise to nobody that a sequel to The Batman was officially greenlit, as the movie was a huge hit, making $ 770 million worldwide. However, director Matt Reeves doesn’t want to make just one follow-up, but he has plans for an entire Batman trilogy. Coincidentally, Reeves also directed two of the three movies in the Apes reboot, making him the go-to director for studios wanting a prestigious trilogy in their catalogs.
Reeves has hinted at what fans could see in the sequels, whether it’s the Court of Owls or a serious take on Mr. Freeze. The latter would especially work well in the first sequel considering how Gotham was underwater at the end of The Batman. Fans are already debating who should play Mr. Freeze too. However, some think that Pattinson should get more than three movies, as a trilogy may rush the story.
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars
After LucasFilm was incredibly happy with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was written and directed by Rian Johnson, the studio announced that the filmmaker would helm an entire trilogy of his own. What Rian Johnson’s Star Wars could be about is a mystery, but some theorize that it might be about Broom Boy, who appeared at the end of the 2017 movie. But why it hasn’t even come to light yet is an even bigger mystery.
Even five years after it was announced, the trilogy still hasn’t been officially canceled yet, even though everyone is convinced that the project has been canned. The latest update on the trilogy is that, though it has not been canceled, it has been moved to the back burner due to the filmmaker’s busy schedule. The writer-director is busy promoting Knives Out 2 and will then immediately go into development on Knives Out 3.
True North
Kevin Smith is hard at work on the Clerks trilogy, as Clerks 3 is in post-production and could end up being one of the best legacy sequels ever, as it follows Clerks 2 by 16 years. However, while fans love Smith for his vulgar sense of humor and zany characters in the ViewAskweniverse, he has quietly been working on another trilogy.
The True North trilogy is made up of films that are spiritually connected rather than through characters, and two of the movies have already been released. Tusk and Yoga Hosers are supernatural horror comedies, and the filmmaker plans to make a third movie, Moose Jawswhich he describes as “like Jawsbut with a moose. “
Spider-Man
General audiences have absolutely no clue where Sony (and maybe Marvel Studios) will take the character next, as Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with so many questions. Not only is it unknown where the MCU Spider-Man will go next, but fans are now speculating about Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 4 and Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
However, Sony producer Amy Pascal confirmed that another Spider-Man trilogy is in development, even though there is no concrete plan. Given that Sony has been building a cinematic universe full of the web-slinger’s villains that the studio now calls Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, the upcoming trilogy will no doubt see Spidey locking horns with Morbius, Venom, and Madame Web.
Dune
It’s no secret the director Denis Villeneuve is working with Warner Bros. to deliver a second sci-fi epic in the Dune series. The title card of the first movie said Dune: Part Oneand the whole 2.5 hours only felt like half of the story.
However, audiences might not know that there is not just going to be a sequel, but Villeneuve plans to direct a Dune trilogy too. As the second movie will take the series to the end of the first novel, the filmmaker intends on adapting the second novel, The Messiah of Dune, for the third and final film in the trilogy. The director believes the book “could make an extraordinary film.”
The Exorcist
There’s no doubt that The Exorcist is one of the most iconic horror movies ever made, but even though some think it’s too sacred to be remade, it isn’t like the property hasn’t been stretched so thin in the past. The 1973 movie has gotten plenty of sequels, and now, it’ll be remade by David Gordon Green, and he has plans for a whole trilogy too.
Jamie Lee Curtis wants to play the devil in the new Exorcist trilogy. The actor has been optimistic with movie reboots in the past, as she returned to the Halloween franchise not once but twice, and she has a love of strange roles, such as the multiverse hopping IRS agent in Everything Everywhere All at Once. So, strangely, playing the devil in an Exorcist reboot could be the logical next step.
X
While Scream 5 is the most talked-about slasher movie of 2022, one great slasher flick lives in its shadow. This year Xdirected by Ty West, follows the cast and crew of an adult movie that’s shooting in an elderly couple’s Texas home, but they soon find themselves being preyed upon by a serial killer.
The movie was overwhelmingly praised by critics, and it’s almost as if studio A24 knew how successful it’d be, as West shot the prequel, Pearl, back-to-back. And even though very little is known about the follow-up and post-production on the film hasn’t even finished, West is already talking about wanting to make a second sequel to X. The director notes that it’ll be stylistically different from its predecessors, just as Pearl is stylistically different from X.
