With the recent launch of Immortal X-Men and the second volume of Marauders, Kitty Pryde has been getting more screentime than ever. A pirate and a member of Krakoa’s Quiet Council, she has more than proven her worth to mutant society as a whole.
But, despite her frequent appearances and her wider significance within X-Men comics, there are certainly some fans who can not look past a few key ideas or characteristics regarding Kitty. Given how many fans love the character, some X-Men fans have been willing to voice their unpopular opinions to speak out about Kitty Pryde.
Bring Back The Rollerskates
While Kitty Pryde has had considerably fewer costumes over the years than some of her contemporary heroes, there is one that still manages to capture the attention of readers decades after the fact. In Uncanny X-Men # 149, Kitty planned to attend her first mission dressed in a clashing suit and rollerskates.
Even today, the costume draws eyes. “Kitty’s skater costume is a terrible classic!” says Earlvx129 on Reddit. “And I want to see her wear it again these while leading the Marauders!” It’s definitely classic, especially since it feels like something a 13-year-old would definitely wear. A pirate captain, though, may want to pass on the cowboy gloves.
Ultimate Peter Parker Was Kitty’s Best Romance
While Kitty Pryde has dated countless men (usually named Peter), there was one that really had readers fall in love with the relationship. In the Ultimate universe, in one of Spider-Man’s best relationships, Kitty and Peter Parker actually started dating – and had real chemistry!
“I actually really liked her and Peter together and hoped it would be one way Ultimate would differentiate itself from the main timeline,” says Redditor kelvin_oh89. The two really seemed to understand each other, given their dual secret identities and matching powersets. Still, it sadly ended up breaking up when Peter fell for MJ again.
Movie Kitty Should Date Spider-Man
But, though Peter and Kitty broke up, some fans are not willing to let the relationship go. “Since the X-Men are coming to the MCU that means Kitty Pryde and Spiderman can maybe start dating in this universe,” says Regime-leader on Reddit. “It also means BRIDGING that gap between the X-Men and Avengers universe too.”
Given that the worst has happened to Spider-Man in the MCU, now that MJ and all of his friends have forgotten him, Peter will likely end up finding a new love interest. While it’s possible that it could end up being Kitty Pryde, it is not likely. Kitty would be better off establishing herself within the franchise and to a new audience before entering a relationship with an established hero like Spider-Man.
X-Men Gold Kitty Doesn’t Work
While many readers enjoyed the recent X-Men Gold run, some fans just found Kitty’s character tiring. “This time around she doesn’t even seem like herself anymore,” says Reddit user amator7. “There are things Guggenheim has done with her that just do not fit with her characterization at all (having no sympathy for the Morlocks, not having a Jewish wedding, just her general bluntness).”
Given that Kitty is often presented as a considerate woman trying to do good for all those around her, it can be disappointing to see a book fail to present those aspects of her personality. Still, the book does have some of Kitty’s best moments, like the scene wherein she abandons her wedding in a dramatic and somewhat hilarious moment.
Captain Kate Is The Best
While most fans tend to lean towards appreciating Kitty Pryde from Astonishing X-Men more than anything else, some have caught onto her more in the current era. Without an ability to pass through Krakoa’s mutant teleportation gates, she found herself a pirate on the high seas. Just do not ask her why.
“Kitty never clicked with me but I love her current pirate persona,” says Redditor JavierLoustaunau. It’s an understandable take. After all, it’s a restoration of her personality and incredibly powerful skillset from Excalibur, which is something fans enjoyed. Besides, given her ninja training, it has been a lot of fun seeing Captain Kate fighting with swords like Nightcrawler does.
Kitty Is Too Unlikable
While she has always been somewhat proud – even to the point of arrogance – she has often had fans who loved her regardless. After all, she spent most of the 80s bragging about taking college classes at 13 years old. Yet, some fans have been shocked about her recent behavior.
“I decided to read Maraudersbut I found Kitty to be really annoying and self-centered, “Reddit user Imthatoneguythatis. While it’s an odd take, given that her Marauders personality isn’t exactly new, everyone is entitled to their opinions. Still, it’s hard to call a character self-centered when they’re sailing around the world saving people.
It Was Right To Replace Kitty
Kitty Pryde was the original teenage sidekick for the X-Men, but that does not mean every fan liked her. When discussing the erasure of Kitty Pryde from the Days of Future Past narrative in the Fox X-Men movies, Redditor thikthird says, “I’m all for replacing her as much as possible. She’s my least favorite X-Man.”
Given how essential Kitty was to the original comic storyline, it is not exactly fair to remove her from the story. While some fans may have their preferences, people who enjoy Kitty still deserve to have her involved in a storyline she was a key to. After all, what would a Dark Phoenix movie be without Jean Gray?
The Star-Lord Relationship Was Awful
One of the strangest pairings in Marvel Comics came when Star-Lord came to Earth and recruited Kitty Pryde into the Guardians of the Galaxy. The two quickly formed a relationship that fans were surprised to find that they enjoyed. Of course, not everyone was on board.
“This version of Peter is a juvenile child who is openly the things that Kitty supposedly hated about dating Bobby,” says Redditor OtherGeorgeDubya. It is fair to say that, since Kitty’s relationship with Iceman ended as poorly as it did. Still, Quill offered Kitty a whole new universe, something she desperately needed after the arc that had her trapped in a bullet in space.
Early Kitty Is The Best
Before Kitty was one of the best fighters in the X-Men, she was a teenager trying to survive as the youngest member of the team. Though most fans gravitate toward her later appearances, some appreciate her early work more. “I really can not recommend reading everything Claremont did with her from her first appearance to when he left Excalibur enough,” says Dissossk on Reddit.
It’s a great idea, considering that Kitty’s development in that era was extraordinary. She quickly grew from a terrified girl to a skilled mutant who knew how to handle herself in and out of fights. While fans should still read Marauders and Astonishing X-Men, those early appearances really helped ingrain who Kitty was. Besides, fans never get to see her work with computers anymore.
The Bullet Was A Bad Idea
While Astonishing X-Men was one of the best arcs for Kitty Pryde, it can not be denied that some fans hate how it ended. “Least favorite version of Kitty Pryde: the one stuck as a ghost in a space bullet for ever and ever,” says Reddit user disappointer.
After saving the world by phasing a giant bullet, she was trapped out in space until Magneto pulled her back. But Kitty was gone for years, leaving many frustrated by her disappearance. Still, the arc was fairly essential for her character and truly proved just how powerful Kitty could be.
