Elden Ring was released on February 25th, but the hype hasn’t died out yet. Many fans are still itching for more content, however, and are hoping for the announcement of a DLC sooner rather than later.
FromSoftware’s games have always been popular, but never to the degree of Elden Ring. Elden Ring is looking to safely obtain game of the year, and will undoubtedly be hailed as one of the best fantasy RPGs of all time. Although it has yet to be determined which is the superior, another fantasy RPG that is a video game legend is Skyrima game that unsurprisingly bears many similarities to Elden Ring.
Open World and Free Roaming
The most obvious similarity between these two games is the vast open world both games throw players into.
Both games allow the player complete free roaming, letting them go where they choose. Some areas might be off limits until a certain quest is completed, but for the most part, the player can visit anywhere they please. Both games also feature beautiful worlds with plenty of nature to visit.
Quests
Quests are a large part of both games, as well as any of the best RPGs. While there aren’t nearly as many questlines in Elden Ring as there are in Skyrimeach one is unique and possesses an interesting story.
Many quests in Skyrim can feel a bit repetitive and unnecessary, but at least there is always something to do. It seems near impossible to actually complete every quest in Skyrim, but that also helps give players many options to choose from. Perhaps if or when Elden Ring expands, it will be more capable of competing with Skyrim‘s absurd quest options.
Friendly NPCs and Enemies
In both games, there are always plenty of friendly NPCs and enemies wandering about. The NPCs will either give players helpful tips, be part of a questline, or serve as a merchant.
One mistake players make in Skyrim that every player should avoid is swinging their blade willy-nilly, as NPCs in both games can be killed. The enemies wandering around in the game will always attack players and can be found either roaming around the world or in caves and dungeons.
Horses
While Torrent isn’t exactly a horse, he is still a trusty companion players can ride upon in Elden Ring.
Both Torrent and horses in Skyrim are similar in how they help overcome obstacles and traverse their respective worlds. While the horses of Skyrim certainly can not leap nearly as high as Torrent, the horses are known to be able to glide up mountains through glitches. This glitch has been the source of thousands of memes online and makes Skyrim‘s horses some of the most beloved in video games.
Weapons and Magic
What is a Fantasy RPG without sword and sorcery? Both games feature a vast amount of weapons and magic to choose from. There are indeed varieties of weapons such as swords, axes, and spears, but even these have their own variants with heavier versions.
The same can be said for magic as there are different types. Some are in categories involving healing magic, while others are used primarily for the offensive.
Forging and Enchanting
Forging and enchanting are a bit different between the two games, but they share the same concept.
Both games use forging as a way to increase the effects of weapons, or in Skyrim‘s case, weapons and armor. While in Skyrim Players can craft new weapons and enhance their strength, only the latter can be done in Elden Ring. However, players are given methods to enhance their weapons in different ways by adding elements and special skills. This is similar to the enchanting in Skyrim via soul gems.
Armor
Players certainly do not want their characters to look the same as everyone else’s, and the option of armor helps give a snazzy look and extra defense. The best-looking armor sets can be essential for some players, even over their protectiveness.
In both games, players are given the option to either wear an entire set or to wear only specific parts, such as the chest armor or helmets. Armor in Skyrim typically has its own specific skill imbued into them via soul gems, but the effects in Elden Ring are much more detailed and can not change. Choosing the right armor set in Elden Ring is vital for whatever build a player is going toward.
Leveling to fit Build
While the leveling system between the two games is fairly different, there is a diverse enough amount of stats that players can choose what they want to level up that works toward their desired build.
Elden Ring provides players with a relatively straightforward system with listed attributes and what players want to raise each time. Players who want to harness sorcery may work on increasing their intelligence, whereas those who want to focus on using weapons for melee builds will work on strength and dexterity. In Skyrim, players have far more options, as they’re able to work on leveling up certain skills for different sorts of crafting or combat.
Dungeons and Dragons
Yes, these games take influence from Dungeons & Dragonsbut there are quite a few literal dungeons and dragons featured in the game.
Both Elden Ring and Skyrim feature a plethora of dungeons spread across the map. It is impossible when wandering to not run into one every now and then. Dragons on the other hand are a bit rarer. Skyrim has specific locations where players can fight dragons that will in time respawn. Elden Ringon the other hand, has set locations only for each dragon, and unlike Skyrimthere are no respawns for these creatures.
Assassination
One of the coolest similarities between these two games is the assassination questlines. Video game fans will be far more familiar with the Dark Brotherhood from Skyrim that assigns the Dragonborn onto assassination tasks. But there’s actually a group in Elden Ring very similar to this located at the Volcano Manor.
Tarnished can join the manor and begin hunting down other tarnished and assassinating them. It’s a questline highly recommended for anyone who loved the Dark Brotherhood quest.
