MCU fans will be excited to hear that Thor: Love And Thunder clocks in at 119 minutes, making it the shortest MCU film in 4 years. It deviates from the norm of previous MCU movies booked at more than 2 hours and 15 minutes, but a long runtime for a film does not equate to an automatic masterpiece. From Aquaman to House of Guccithese movies have so much potential to narrate a story, but the bloated runtime ruins the enjoyment.
There’s nothing worse than sitting through a movie with pointless scenes that do not contribute to the plot. Of course, everyone has a different threshold for runtime tolerance, and Reddit users are more than happy to speak up when they find a movie that’s too long.
King Kong (2005)
There was a ton of hype around Peter Jackson’s King Kong before it came out, but the movie’s 188-minute run time was just too much for some viewers to handle. To make matters worse, not seeing King Kong himself in the first hour of an overly long movie was unforgivable for some.
Reddit user theimpspeaks says, “It’s boring and goes on forever.” Guiltyofnothing agrees, calling the movie “horribly paced” and saying “the CGI did not even look good.” King Kong is certainly a divisive movie with the most classic story that was ruined by its long duration and poor visual effects.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Andrew Garfield returned as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The movie came with a 142-minute runtime, which is about half an hour too long for some fans.
Redditor tomxairey said the movie contained “multiple unneeded plot lines” and that the movie was “padded.” Honest-Actuator-5364 agreed, calling it “a total mess.” For this sequel, it’s fair to say that director Marc Webb overdramatized Spider-Man’s adventure without getting to important parts until the end, and its long duration made it the least rewatchable. Spider-Man movie.
House Of Gucci (2021)
House of Gucci is a biopic about the title’s namesake fashion family, with Adam Driver and Lady Gaga turning in buzzworthy performances in the lead roles. But, the movie was met with mixed reviews, and Jared Leto even earned a Razzie award for his cringe-worthy performance.
Redditors were not kind to House of Gucci, either. One user said, “I feel like you could cut 30 minutes from every movie lately.” YolandaDiamondQueen seconded that notion calling the movie “too long” and “somewhat boring”. It seems like Ridley Scott’s obvious attempt at Oscar bait was too inflated to be enjoyable.
Funny People (2009)
Throughout the 2000s, Judd Apatow made a name for himself as a director in comedies, including 40-Year -Old Virgin (2005), Knocked Up (2007), and This Is 40 (2012). One of his lesser-known movies is Funny Peoplestarring Adam Sandler as George Simmonds, a washed-up actor trying to re-discover his love of comedy via stand-up.
The premise sounds promising, but the ironically-titled Funny People did not generate many laughs. Reddit user theblackfool was fine with the movie, but said it “goes on too long” and that it “could’ve shaved some run time.” A runtime of 146 minutes is long for any movie, let alone another melodrama where Sandler is essentially playing himself.
DC’s Aquaman is full of ambition but short on entertainment value. Even an amusing performance from Jason Mamoa as the true King of the Seas could not save the movie from becoming a convoluted train wreck. Hopefully, the further delay of Aquaman 2 ensures it’s better than the first.
Wooferino believes Aquaman‘s length was its downfall – “They devote so much of the dismally long runtime to fight scenes and literally nothing to developing the characters at all.” It’s hard to care about characters without understanding why they undergo such missions in the first place.
The King Of Staten Island (2021)
Another Apatow-directed epic is The King Of Staten Islandstarring Saturday Night Live alumni Pete Davidson. Davidson stars as a version of himself, a slacker from Staten Island, New York, trying to cope with ADD and Crohn’s disease and dealing with the trauma caused by his father’s death at an early age.
This Reddit thread did not have much love for The King Of Staten Island, with user MerrillSwingAway calling stating it “meanders to too long, then fizzles out with no concrete resolution”. RedAppleSmoke adds, “I did not laugh once.” That’s a rough start for Davidson, who recently left SNL to start a comedy career on his own.
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019)
Some people could go on for days about their qualms with Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker while others felt it was a satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker Saga. Some Redditors commented that The Rise Of Skywalker could’ve been done better with its 142-minute runtime.
User tractgildart said, “It’s very rushed. Almost nothing feels earned. Constant feeling of whiplash as the story moves so quickly.” In the same thread, user Dagordae was even less polite, stating, “The pacing and storyline are just horrible. It’s very apparent the movie is built around rushing from setpiece to setpiece to fill in a story that they do not have time to actually. do. ” When it comes to Star Wars movies, it’s hard to be original and please everyone at the same time as it tries to develop its lore that sometimes does not make sense.
Blade Runner 2049 (2018)
Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner (1982) is a sci-fi classic set in a dystopian future, packing action and adventure in a tight 117-minute runtime. Its sequel, Blade Runner 2049, tested viewers’ patience with a whopping 163-minute runtime, leaving some fans to wonder if every minute was necessary to tell expand its story.
Reddit was all over Blade Runner 2049 for its pacing issues. TheWagonBaron said, “It’s kind of boring. I like it a lot. Visually it was very impressive but there were long stretches where nothing of consequence happens.” Considering the movie performed poorly with $ 259 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo), a lot of people probably feel the same way.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019)
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie, and perhaps his most laid-back as well. Unlike his previous outings, Hollywood is not filled with the same level of gore his fans might be expecting or craving, but it does contain many of his trademarks.
Many Tarantino movies are on the long side, but Redditor bluekhan says, “I understand the criticism of it feeling like an hour of people driving around,” and calls the first two-thirds of the movie “slow”. Redditor HappyGabe takes it even further, calling the movie “an unexpected waste of time.” The runtime of 161 minutes without much action is a lot to ask of Tarantino fans.
Don’t Look Up (2021)
Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up is one of the most divisive films of 2021. Some viewers loved it, others hated it, and most would agree that it did not need to be 145 minutes. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence play scientists trying to convince the various bumbling governments that there’s imminent danger in the sky in the form of a meteor that will destroy human civilization as they know it.
There are Reddit threads both praising and criticizing the movie – sometimes at the same time. User Jas_God called it a “solid satirical film” but emphasized that it was “a bit too long.” Despite its inflated runtime, it did not stop Don’t Look Up from earning a few award nominations, including a Best Picture nod.
