Disney + ‘s reality TV The Quest is extraordinary for a number of reasons, not least of which is its ability to combine the genres of fantasy and reality television in new and visually compelling ways. What’s more, there are many times when it almost becomes as entertaining as a fully-scripted series.
Though it stands apart from its counterparts in the genre, it also shares some similarities with other series – both reality and drama – which means that those who find themselves enjoying the pleasures offered up by The Quest will have other shows in which they can indulge.
Legends Of The Hidden Temple (2021-) – Streaming On Paramount +
Legends of the Hidden Temple is one of the most charming and clever reality competition shows to have aired. In its original iteration in the 1990s it was a central part of Nickelodeon’s programming.
It has, of course, been reinvented and rebooted for the 2020s, and it now airs on the CW. However, it manages to keep most of the things that made it so appealing in its original incarnation. It has much to offer fans of The Questparticularly with its emphasis on history and mythology.
The Quest (2014) – Streaming On Prime Video
Those who enjoy this iteration of The Quest will also find much to savor in its 2014 incarnation. As with its new version, the series focuses on a group of contestants competing in a fictional fantasy landscape.
Unlike many other reality competitions, which consistently pit people against one another – and thus tend to engender at least a measure of bitterness–The Quest instead seems to go for pure joy, and it is obvious from the looks on many of the contestants’ faces that they are enjoying their time on the series.
Who Wants To Be A Superhero? (2006-2007) – Streaming On Hulu
Series like The Quest are so much fun precisely because they bring together various cultural pleasures, particularly those surrounding competition and fantasy. As its title implies, Who Wants to Be a Superhero performs a similar function, though in this case it is focused on people competing with one another in their superhero personae.
As anyone might expect, there are a number of challenges with each round, which served as a means of eliminating contestants. The winner would star in a comic and a made-for-TV movie.
Critical Role (2015) – Streaming On YouTube
Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most influential games in modern history, with an impact that continues to be felt in various corners of popular culture. One needs to look no further than Critical Rolewhich features voice actors playing the game, to see how much pleasure it can provide for those who enjoy it.

The Guild (2007-2013) – Streaming On Apple TV +
In popular culture, the gamer is a little more than a stereotype. The Guild, however, works to subvert that expectation, showcasing many different types of players in its story about a guild of online gamers. What makes it an especially entertaining series is the way it shows how easily the worlds of the online and the real can bleed into one another.
In this respect, it is sure to appeal to fans of The Questwhich similarly blends fantasy and reality.
Dead Pixels (2019-2021) – Streaming On Prime Video
The Quest, like many of the best reality TV shows, manages to blend together wish fulfillment and competition. Though Dead Pixels is a sitcom rather than a reality series, it nevertheless builds such a blurring of boundaries into its story.
It focuses on a group of friends who are obsessed with an online game and who increasingly find their everyday lives becoming more complicated as a result, particularly once romance begins to enter into the equation. There’s an undeniable chemistry among the cast, and its comedy is both warm-hearted and razor-sharp.
The Legend Of Vox Machina (2022-Present)
As The Quest reveals, this is something of a golden age for fantasy television series of various kinds, both in reality TV and in drama. The Legend of Vox Machina is a particularly compelling series, both because of the storyline – which focuses on the titular group as they set out on various quests to save the kingdom – but also because of the stylishness of its animation.
The fact that it features a stellar voice cast and was inspired by the D&D super-fan stars of Critical Role allows it to become one of the best fantasy series currently airing on television.
Escape The Night (2016-2019) – Streaming On YouTube
The Quest takes its place as one of the more unique reality TV series, focusing as it does on a fantasy world. In Escape the Night, various competitors are invited into a mansion that is set in a bygone era, and they have to solve a variety of puzzles in an attempt to survive the night and escape. It is a fascinating series, and it is especially entertaining to watch the contestants attempt to solve the puzzles.
Like The Quest, it manages to blend together elements of the fantastic with the unique competitive pleasures of reality TV. And Escape the Night is particularly intriguing because lots of fan-favorite YouTubers make up the cast.
The Next Great Magician (2016-present) – Currently Not Available To Stream
Many fantastic magicians have graced television and the presence of these figures, like The Quest, demonstrates just how much of a thirst for escapism there is in the general viewing public. Thus, it is not surprising that there would be a reality series focused on finding someone who is especially skilled at feats of illusion and magic.
Though it is not especially adventurous in terms of its structure, it nevertheless keeps the audience guessing just who will emerge as the victor.
Man At Arms (2017-2019) – Not Available For Streaming
History and popular culture are filled with various weapons, many of which play a key role in the stories that have been told across every medium. Thus, it is not surprising that there would be a reality TV series focused on recreating such iconic pieces of weaponry, and this is the central premise of Man at Arms.
However, the concept goes beyond just crafting the weapon in question. After it is made, the weapon is then put to the test by the judges to see if it is both functional and fashionable.
