RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars is currently on its seventh season, featuring previous winners such as Jinkx Monsoon, Raja Gemini and Shea Couleé. To help RuPaul decide which queens deserve the Legendary Legend Star every episode is the mainstay judge Michelle Visage.
Since joining the judges’ panel in season 3 of Drag Race, Michelle Visage has been a regular fixture in the show and drag-related events. But the Seduction member and radio DJ has also ventured outside of the Drag Race franchise. Some of her most memorable stints are her appearance on Ireland’s Got Talent as a judge and Celebrity Big Brother UK as a contestant. Her numerous appearances on both American and British TV have spawned some unforgettable quotes.
A Lesson For All The Queens
“Stop relying on that body!”
Michelle joined RuPaul’s Drag Race for the show’s third season, which is notorious for its laborious design challenges, iconic cat fights, and outstanding contestants, which included Carmen Carrera.
Carmen knew that she had a great figure, and she used it to her advantage by consistently wearing revealing outfits on the main stage. This prompted the frank Michelle Visage to directly address Carmen and told her to stop relying on her physique to succeed on the runway. In the years since, Visage’s “stop relying on that body” advice has become something of a Drag Race catchphrase.
A True Mentor
“I’m so f — ing proud of you I could s —.”
During the third season of Drag Race, contestant Shangela Laquifa Wadley had a lot to prove. Aside from being given a second chance by RuPaul after being the first queen eliminated from season two, Shangela also had beef with a lot of the girls in the show.
Shangela was always harshly criticized for her fashion sense, but she was able to go far in the competition due to her acting, singing, and comedy chops. Being the mentor that she is, Michelle always gave Shangela great pieces of advice on the main stage. That’s why Michelle did not hesitate in telling Shangela that she was proud of her after seeing the contestant do great in the challenges.
On Being Impersonated By Sharon Needles
“I’m not as old as you wanted to make me, bitch.”
After she rocked ghoulish and creepy ensembles on the Drag Race main stage, nobody expected Sharon Needles to also be a comedy queen. The soon-to-be season-four winner was also considered audacious as she chose to impersonate Michelle for Snatch Game.
Sharon’s risky move proved to be successful, as many fans consider her performance as one of the best Snatch Game celebrity impressions in the history of the show. Even Michelle enjoyed her portrayal, but the judge did have gripes with how old Sharon portrayed her.
Talking Straight With Laganja Estranja
“No, you talk like this! This is how you talk!”
Despite not being popular among viewers at the time, Laganja Estranja stole the show and had some of the best moments during the sixth season of Drag Race. Laganja also had a distinct way of talking and arguably popularized the catchphrases “Okurrr!” and “Yes, gawd!”
However, Michelle was not a huge fan of the way Laganja projected herself while the cameras were rolling. While judging the comedy challenge, Michelle called Laganja out for being inauthentic and encouraged the contestant to embrace herself and not put on a facade.
Michelle is on the judges’ panel of Drag Race for a reason. She’s very meticulous when it comes to judging the performance, outfits, and attitudes of the drag queens that compete in the show.
During the first episode of season seven, the theme for the runway was nude illusion. Taking a look at Kandy Ho, Michelle noticed that the queen’s makeup was not on point with her chin contour being too dark and resembling a beard. This prompted Michelle to wag her finger and say simply but impactfully, “No.” No other words were necessary.
Spilling The T
“It’s a piece of fabric.”
The difficulty of the design challenges on Rupaul’s Drag Race is akin to the ones in Project Runway. Contestants have to conceptualize, sew, and hot glue glamorous outfits depending on the theme given by RuPaul. In season 8, Derrick Barry had a hard time constructing her garment based on the Tin Man from the iconic film. The Wizard of Oz.
Derrick was clocked by Michelle for her unkempt and poorly-made outfit, with the judge going so far as saying, “It’s … a piece of fabric.”
Best Friends Forever
“Do not worry, Ru. I’ll always be your breast Judy.”
RuPaul and Michelle go way back. Before Michelle guested on RuPaul’s VH1 talk show, the pair have already crossed paths in the New York voguing and ball scene. Without a doubt, the duo is one of the best friendships seen on TV today.
During the finale of season 11, Michelle brought to light her bout with breast implant illness and revealed that she had her implants removed. But of course, she did not forget to keep the atmosphere light and assured RuPaul that their friendship remains solid by joking, “Do not worry, Ru. I’ll always be your breast Judy,” a play on words referencing a queen’s best friend being her “best Judy.”
An Honest Mistake
“That’s your nose?”
Michelle is not a stranger to surgical enhancements. However, that does not mean that the judge is good at spotting if someone had some work done – or if they’re wearing prosthetics.
During the successful first episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, The Vivienne, one of the funniest drag queens in the franchise, showed that she can also pull off stunning looks on the main stage. Michelle was particularly impressed with The Vivienne’s makeup, as she thought the contestant had prosthesis on. However, this was not the case, and the surprised Michelle could not believe that The Vivienne was able to change her entire face with only makeup.
Keeping It Real
“You do not have to apologize. I’m just telling you how I feel.”
Michelle also made an appearance on British telly when she joined the 15th season of Celebrity Big Brother. During an intense confrontation with American blogger and fellow contestant Perez Hilton, Michelle did not hold back.
The Drag Race judge told Perez how she felt snubbed after the blogger attained fame. This prompted Perez to apologize. However, Michelle was quick to deflect the blogger’s seemingly ingenuine apology by saying, “You do not have to apologize, I’m just telling you how I feel.”
“I’m the f — ing head of the mean girls.”
Michelle and Perez had a very fierce rift on Celebrity Big Brother. Perez was concerned that the public would not react positively to Michelle’s appearance on the show due to her association with certain housemates. The blogger went so far as nominating Michelle that week in order to give her an “opportunity to learn.”
But Michelle assured her fellow housemate that she knows the British public more than Perez and to not worry about her. She unapologetically owned her mean-girl status by declaring, “I’m the f — ing head of the mean girls” after being nominated by Perez.
